Cycle Routes In & Around Dartmoor
Here at Holne Chase we are very lucky to be situated near a great range of cycle routes, which provide a fun & energetic way to explore South Devon’s stunning costal scenes, rolling green hills & glorious woodlands. Whether you are a passionate pedaller or casual cyclist there is route for you!
With days getting longer, temperatures warming & plants blossoming in time for summer, it is the perfect time to book some time away & visit Dartmoor. To tempt you further, we have picked out a few of the best cycle paths which are just a short drive from out self-catered holiday cottages.
The Exe Estuary Trail
This cycle path is perfect for those with younger children as nearly all 26 miles are flat & almost the entire route is off-road. No matter how far you decided to pedal, you will be able see beautiful wildlife (such as the Deer which roam the grounds of Powderham Castle), pass through stunning river side towns & be blessed with panoramic views throughout your journey. The Exe Estuary is a site of special scientific interest & a special protection area so it also the ideal place for some bird watching.
East Prawle Cycling Route
This 12 mile circular cycle journey takes you down quite & winding country lanes (with little to no traffic!) & beautiful bridleways, covered by luscious leafy canopies. This route has superb & varied scenery which means that you could catch a glimpse of the local wildlife as well as see evidence of the areas local maritime history.
Scadson Woods Bike Park
For younger couples staying with us, who are looking for a bit of adventure, we recommend visiting Scadson Woods. Scadson is a purpose-built mountain bike trail, located just outside of Paignton & is suitable for all abilities. All three, 500 meter long, downhill trails are professionally built. There is area specifically created for beginners as well as a skills training area filled with obstacles & a slalom track.
This network of cycling trails, which run along the western edge of Dartmoor, will enable you to take in lots of historical places of interest. As you cycle along, you will meander through wooded river valleys & travel across open moorland. Along the way you will be able to see iconic features such as the Gem Bridge, Grenofen Tunnel & Sir Francis Drake’s birthplace.
