Fabulous Fishy Food
South Devon is home to an array of delicious food, boasting some of the finest restaurants in the country. Its coastal waters, which provide the freshest fish, mean that South Devon is renowned for amazing seafood.
One of the busiest & best known fishing ports in the UK is Brixham, which supplies most of the Devon region with delicious crab. Depending on the season, you can expect to find prawns, lobster, scallops, bass, soles, mullet and more on South Devon’s menus.
With an abundance of fishing villages and pretty quayside towns, there’s a huge choice of restaurants for you to choose from when you stay at one of our self-catered holiday cottages.
Here is just a small selection of some restaurants in South Devon.
The Crab Shack, Teignmouth
Run by fisherman Rob Simmonds and his wife Amanda, the Crab Shack is a real gem in Teignmouth & has some of the best crab sandwiches that you will ever taste! Their boats, 'La Vagabonde Des Mer' & 'The Royal Escape', go to sea daily which means their catch of the day menu always has fresh ingredients. Like most seafood restaurants, The Crab Shack is committed to sustainable fishing.
The Jetty, Salcombe
Salcombe Harbour Hotel has a stylish new restaurant called The Jetty and it really is a fish lover’s heaven. The restaurant takes full advantage of its waterfront location and serves dishes from fish caught on its doorstep. Award winning chef Alex Aitken creates mouth-watering masterpieces and, even better, he is a ‘home grown chef’ who started his career as a trawler man. Soon to open is an outdoor terrace, where you can sit around roaring fire pits while enjoying eating al fresco lunches or delicious dinners.
Anchorstone Cafe, Dartmouth
For several years the Anchorstone Cafe was a small tea room but over the past nine years it has transformed into restaurant specialising in seafood lunches. It’s amazing panoramic view across the River Dart from the outside terrace or inside restaurant are the perfect accompaniment to scrumptious dishes created from crab, lobster and spider crab to mussels, squid and mackerel.
Britannia Shellfish, Torcorss
Britannia was established in 1995 by fisherman Nick Hutchings and his wife Anita. This longstanding family fishing business recently set up a cafe just yards from Beesands' wonderful shingle beach on Start Bay. Nick fishes daily from his catamaran where he lands crabs, lobsters and scallops from the bay.
The Port Light Hotel, Restaurant & Inn, Bolberry Down Nr Salcombe
Port Light Restaurant is traditional in its furnishings but at the start of the 2015 season they got a new kitchen team who have completely modernised their menu. The restaurant commands an impressive 360° panoramic coastal and country view from its cliff top position and is arguably the best place to watch the sun go down. We highly recommend their wonderful homemade crab cakes, available on their bar and restaurant menu.
