The Musical Month of May
This May South Devon will be home to an amazing assortment of musical events, all of which will help you unwind after a day exploring Dartmoor. Whether you prefer high energy concerts or intimate gigs, you are sure to find the perfect event to get your toes tapping.
There is plenty of brilliant music events under 30 minute drive away from our self-catered holiday cottages. Here are just a few of our favourites to choose from this season:
Powderham Music Festival
Powderham Castle are hosting their second ‘New Generation Artists’ concert this season and this time it will be blessed by the musical stylising of Joo Yeon.
Described as exuberant, seductive & full of bravura & personality, Joo Yeon is a multi-award winning Korean violinist. This phenomenal virtuoso has developed a large fan base in the Far East & is set to take the UK’s classical scene by storm. Her set will include Schubert Rondo Brilliante and Brahms Sonata No.3 in D minor.
Dart Music Festival
As a small town situated on the banks of the beautiful River Dart, Dartmouth is a magnificent location to stage a festival which celebrates all styles of music. The Dart Music Festival is an annual 3 day event which is now on its 18th year! The festival’s “Music For All” ethos means that the performers span almost every musical genre. From Jazz to Rock, Fold to Opera & Ska to Gospel, each year’s line up is very varied.
The music is performed at a variety of venue’s including a Victorian bandstand, an ancient fort, an 11th Century Church and the local Arts Centre to name but a few. This multitude of venues means that not only do you get to listen to great music but you also get to explore the picturesque surroundings that Dartmouth has to offer.
Ashburton Blues Festival
The Ashburton Blues Festival is set in the glorious South Devon countryside & each year is packed with some of the very best Blues performers around. This festival is a three night, two day, extravaganza, with non-stop music, jam sessions & workshops.
This is a relaxed weekend of great music, with a chance to hear and talk to musicians in an intimate setting. This year’s headliner is Mud Morganfield, who you may have seen on “Hugh Laurie’s Copper Bottom Blues” TV show. And of course, there will be of delicious locally sourced food & drink available throughout.
Brix Fest Brixham
Award-winning BrixFest is back for its 4th year and is set to be bigger and better than ever before! The free, fun and family-friendly festival is held over 3 action packed days with fun to be had by people of all ages.
In addition to great live music, there’s the internationally renowned Yakovlevs Aerobatic Display Team. See them take to the skies to fly in formation & perform breathtaking manoeuvres. There will also be a grand fireworks display, which will use new technology so that fireworks will provide a colourful representation of the live music being played in the inner harbour.
